FECORACEN

Protecting Life on Earth

La Libertad is known as a surfing destination for tourists from all over the world. Young people flock here to enjoy sun, sand, and surf. Hotels, resorts, restaurants, and surfing events are part of daily life.

Just 10 kilometers away, hidden from surfers, families live in extreme poverty deep in the backwoods, far from the main paved road. FECORACEN is an organization that aids these communities in their struggle for survival. With support from Kenoli, they organized a beekeeping course for five women’s groups. Initially, some women were fearful of bees and had never considered earning income from these tiny insects.

However, as they received training, materials, and learned more about beekeeping and marketing, their confidence grew. In less than a year, one of the women’s cooperatives expanded their beehives from two to 28 and produced 1,000 lbs. of honey. The women’s initial fear of bees has transformed into a deep appreciation. Besides providing them with a livelihood, they know they are protecting the environment, as these tiny creatures play a crucial role in pollinating crops.

Unnoticed by surfers enjoying the beach, just a few kilometers away, are industrious and courageous women helping to preserve the planet!
