COFADEH

Defending Human Rights

Honduras has a history marred by egregious human rights abuses, particularly following a coup d’état in 2009 until the election of its first female President, Xiomara Castro, in 2021. While the new government shows a strong commitment to human rights, past practices and systems, often fueled by economic interests, still persist.

COFADEH stands as the key organization defending human rights in Honduras, fearlessly speaking “truth to power.” Its founder and Executive Director, Berta Oliva, has received international recognition, including the Tulip Award.

With support from Kenoli, COFADEH provides legal representation for victims of human rights abuses and advocates for the release of unjustly imprisoned individuals under the amnesty decree. They also collaborate extensively with the media to raise awareness about human rights violations and cultivate a network of young female human rights defenders.
