Tackling Child Malnutrition and Food Insecurity in Mayan communities
One of the major challenges in Guatemala is the high prevalence of acute and chronic malnutrition, especially among children under 5 years old. This issue predominantly affects indigenous populations living in rural areas of the country. Government efforts have been inadequate in addressing this crisis.
In this national context, the Women’s Association for the Development of Santiago (AFEDES), with financial support from Kenoli, is implementing a project to address the underlying causes of malnutrition in Guatemalan communities. The project is being implemented in five indigenous communities in the municipality of Tactic, Alta Verapaz, where the child malnutrition rate exceeds 50%.
AFEDES is working with 60 indigenous Poqomchi women to improve food security through family gardens. These women are learning sustainable farming techniques and nutrition practices to enhance the health of their families, particularly children under 5 years old. They are also collaborating with key stakeholders to address issues such as access to water and environmental degradation in their communities. Early results show promise!
Congratulations, AFEDES, for your important work within an Indigenous perspective!
