HONDURAS

Honduras faces significant challenges in crucial areas such as health, education, and nutrition. Access to quality healthcare services is limited, especially in rural areas. Education suffers from persistent issues like high dropout rates and inadequate academic performance. Food insecurity is also a serious concern, particularly in rural regions, exacerbated by natural disasters and climate change.

In response to these challenges, PROHMEDA (Honduran Environmental Protection), based in San Nicolás, Santa Bárbara, engages in community development and environmental conservation with a focus on social and gender equality. With support from Kenoli, PROHMEDA collaborated with 12 schools to establish school gardens aimed at improving children’s nutrition. Children, parents, and teachers learned how to plant and manage vegetables. The produce from these gardens supplemented and enriched the children’s meals. Through training on food preparation, mothers learned to incorporate vegetables into their children’s diets, previously rejected. As a result, children now enjoy more diverse diets, bringing joy to their mothers. Some older students applied what they learned at school in their own homes and even earned income by selling surplus produce.
