During our recent visit to Honduras, much of Central America was in the grip of an intense heat wave, with temperatures soaring above 40°C—especially in the dry corridor. So it was all the more remarkable to see mothers from Las Marías and Los Prados in Choluteca arrive, small children in tow, to take part in an early childhood stimulation program supported by Kenoli’s long-time partner, AMDV. Despite the heat, they weren’t about to miss this opportunity to support their children’s development.

On a simple cement patio, with a piece of carpet rolled out, the space came alive with laughter and play. The children delighted in activities designed to stimulate their growth, while their mothers guided and encouraged them. With creativity and determination, the women have learned to make toys from locally available materials—an important skill where buying toys is simply not an option for families living in poverty or extreme poverty.

AMDV’s work goes beyond play. Mothers also receive practical guidance on nutrition, helping them make the best use of available food to support their children’s health. When needed, children showing signs of malnutrition are referred to local health services. The results are encouraging—many families have successfully overcome malnutrition, a significant and hard-won achievement.

The impact is clear in the voices of the mothers. Catalina, a mother of two, shared how she has seen meaningful changes in her children’s growth and development. Ashley noted that, compared to others, she sees a positive difference in how her own children are progressing.
Just as powerful is the transformation among the women themselves. AMDV trains some participants to become local facilitators, strengthening leadership within the community. Desiris told us she had never spoken in front of a group before and spoke with pride about overcoming that fear—an important step toward greater confidence and participation.

Even under the relentless sun, these mothers showed unwavering commitment. Their determination to give their children a strong start in life is both inspiring and hopeful.
Congratulations to AMDV—you are making a real difference in the lives of children and families. We are deeply proud to stand alongside you in this work.
