ADES

From Desperation to Empowerment

In Cabañas, El Salvador, many low-income families are struggling to feed themselves. Climate change, water scarcity, and ongoing economic hardship have made it increasingly difficult for families to grow or purchase enough food. Diets are often limited in both quantity and diversity, affecting health, especially for women, children, and older adults. For many families, this daily uncertainty creates deep stress and a sense of desperation.

This is where ADES steps in. With support from Kenoli, ADES is working alongside 25 families in 3 communities to rebuild food security and restore hope.

Together, families have established 20 home gardens and one community plot that now produce vegetables, fruits, and medicinal plants. These gardens not only improve nutrition but also strengthen families’ independence and resilience. Women—who are often responsible for food preparation and family health—play a central role in managing the gardens and sharing knowledge within their communities.

To complement this work, 12 chicken coops have been built, providing a reliable source of protein and an opportunity to earn income through the sale of surplus eggs. Families also participate in training sessions on hygiene and healthy household practices, helping to prevent illness and creating safer living environments.

With ADES’ support, five families have made critical improvements to their homes, significantly improving their living conditions and restoring a sense of dignity and safety.

What began as desperation is becoming empowerment. Families are gaining the skills, confidence, and resources they need to nourish their children, strengthen their livelihoods, and build a more secure future.
