Transforming the Lives of Families in San Marcos, San Salvador
Access to water and land is a serious challenge for impoverished families in several communities in San Marcos, just outside the capital city of San Salvador. It is an area ignored by local governments. Families with very few resources settle on the slopes of the San Jacinto hill, where there is no running water. Previously, water was supplied by trucks, but this was suspended, and now families must buy water in barrels, pushing them deeper into poverty. They use this precious water for drinking, washing, cleaning, and watering their gardens.
CESTA began working with 70 families to establish small family gardens and rainwater harvesting systems. Families are able to harvest rainwater from their roofs to use for their gardens. Some families have installed greywater treatment systems to irrigate their crops. Crops are planted in small areas, including flowerpots and even on the roof. Forty families are receiving technical support and materials for chicken coops. The hens lay eggs daily, and the women can make an income from selling excess eggs and vegetables.
CESTA is also working with the mothers and children to assess the children’s nutritional health and stimulate their development. The women come together to cook and share recipes. Previously shy women are now outspoken advocates for access to water.
The women are now encouraged as their lives are brighter. They have nutritious food to eat, and previously malnourished children are now healthier. They feel more empowered.
