On October 18, 2024, the Court of Sensuntepeque, in Cabañas department, acquitted and ordered the release of five community leaders from Santa Marta and the Association for Social Economic Development (ADES). These leaders were arbitrarily detained in January 2023 in connection with an unusual case dating back 35 years. Throughout the proceedings, the accusing party failed to present any evidence, leaving the case unsubstantiated. During this time, ADES, alongside national and international organizations, campaigned tirelessly for the release of the leaders. This recent judgement issued by the court not only secured their freedom and reunification with their families, but it also underscored the dedication and resilience of these communities in defending their natural resources and collective well-being.
